Does your travel eSIM support calls and SMS, or just data?
Last updated: June 24, 2026
Most your travel eSIM plans are data only. That means you can use the internet on your eSIM, but you can't make or receive regular phone calls or SMS messages on the number associated with the eSIM.
What you can still do
- Calls over the internet: WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal, Google Voice, Zoom, and similar apps work normally over your data connection.
- Messaging over the internet: iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and most messaging apps work over data.
- Calls and SMS on your home number: if you keep your home SIM active in your device alongside your travel eSIM, you can still receive calls and SMS on your home number. Whether you're charged for roaming on your home line is up to your home carrier.
What doesn't work on a data-only plan
- Traditional voice calls to or from the number associated with the your travel eSIM eSIM.
- Traditional SMS to or from the eSIM's number.
- Two-factor authentication codes sent by SMS to a temporary travel number — those should be sent to your home number, which stays on your home SIM.
How to check your plan
Check the plan details for what's included. If you bought a plan that explicitly includes calls and SMS, follow the setup guidance for that plan.
