How does eSIM activation work?

Last updated: June 24, 2026

Installing and activating a travel eSIM are two separate steps.

Installation

Installation downloads the carrier profile onto your device. This happens during setup when you scan the QR code or enter the activation code. You can install the eSIM before you travel — it does not need to be in the destination country.

All you need for installation is a Wi-Fi connection.

Activation

Activation is when your eSIM connects to a live network. For travel eSIMs, this happens automatically when you arrive in a covered country and your device detects a local partner network.

You do not need to do anything to activate it — just make sure:

  • Data roaming is enabled on the eSIM line
  • The eSIM is set as the active data SIM
  • You are in a country covered by your plan

Common question — why is my eSIM installed but not active yet?

If you installed the eSIM at home before travelling, it is normal for it to show as installed but not yet connected. It will activate automatically when you land and turn off airplane mode.
