What is a travel eSIM?
Last updated: June 24, 2026
A travel eSIM is a data-only SIM built into your device that gives you local mobile data abroad. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you activate a carrier profile by scanning a QR code or entering an activation code — it sits alongside your regular SIM so calls and texts still work on your home number.
How is it different from a regular eSIM?
Regular eSIM | Travel eSIM |
Replaces your home SIM | Runs alongside your home SIM |
Includes calls, texts, and data | Data only — no calls or texts |
Renews monthly | Valid for a set trip duration |
Tied to one home carrier | Connects to best available network abroad |
What do I need?
- A device with an eSIM chip. See Is my device eSIM compatible?
- A carrier-unlocked device. See Is my device carrier-unlocked?
- Data roaming enabled on the eSIM line. See Do I need roaming enabled to use my travel eSIM?
- A Wi-Fi connection to download the profile during setup
What does it not include?
Travel eSIMs are data only. They do not include a phone number, voice calls, or SMS. Your regular SIM continues to handle calls and texts while abroad.
